We are a new troop forming in Grantville, GA. Starting with the 2007-2008 school year.

Many of us were Girl Scouts as children. Several Moms I have talked with have shared there favorite memory of summer camp or cookie sales. That’s great! Although, each troop is run differently, you already have an idea about what Scouting will involve. For those parents who never participated in Scouts and those whose memories have started to fade… This is for you!

Brownies are girls ages 6-8. They may be new to scouting or they may have been a Daisy last year. Troops typically have one leader, one or two co-leaders and several registered parents who volunteer in many capacities. (see Talent and Interest survey) Troops might meet once a week or once a month, not counting field trips. Troop 169 will meet once a week.  A typical Brownie meeting consists of songs, games, crafts and other activities. They also have time to share their thoughts and help make decisions about troop activities.

During their time as Brownies, girls earn Try-Its, the Brownie version of badges, by completing the requirements in their Try-Its book. Try-Its cover many areas, from learning about Girls Scouting, to sewing, science, cooking, camping, and more. The girls are not expected to master the activities, just “try-it”. The exposure to new things is what is important for the girls at this age.  Fun patches or Participation Patches may be earned at different events or may be given for attending an event. Fun Patches always go on the back of a vest.

While Girl Scout council requires we have two adults for every twelve Brownie Girl Scouts and one adult for each additional six Brownie Girl Scouts, we would like for our parents take turns volunteering to assist with weekly meetings. Each Brownie will have the opportunity to choose a meeting in which she plans the activity. She may choose to make a craft, earn a try-it with the troop, etc…That week she will need a family member to plan to attend so as to assist her.

Girl Scout Promise:

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law

Girl Scout Law:

I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.
